Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using such drugs need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
