Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
