The anticipation about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be designing a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
